What is Excess Insurance?

Your car rental agreement normally includes cover for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft. However you are still liable for the Excess on CDW and Theft. When a rental car is damaged or stolen, the driver is asked to pay the first portion of the repair or replacement costs. This is known as the Excess.

Insurance4CarHire covers you not only for the total amount of Excess for which you are liable if the car is damaged or stolen, but also for damage to the roof and undercarriage of the car, and windows and tyres.

How our Excess Insurance Works

We insure the Policy Holder, not the rental vehicle. Excess is a voluntary insurance . Decline the car rental company’s Excess cover at the counter when you collect the car. If the car is damaged or stolen, the car rental company will charge your credit card for the Excess amount and you then claim for reimbursement on your Policy.

booking car hire

If you require car hire to get from the airport to Puerto Pollensa then you should aim to have this booked and confirmed in advance. Even though there appear to be hundreds of unused rental cars parked at Palma Airport, the sheer volume of tourist arrivals, particularly at peak season, means there are rarely any spare vehicles for "walk-ins".

If your transport to Puerto Pollensa is by coach you can still arrange car rental, usually at quite short notice, either via your tour operator's representative or directly by visiting one of the local offices. Beware however the "wet day" response where every car seems to be taken within a few minutes of the first spot of rain!

choosing your car

The majority of Hire companies give letter classifications for their cars according to size, specification and tariff. "A" range cars are usually the smallest and cheapest, typically being a three door 1.1 litre model. As you move up the ranges five doors and air conditioning become standard together with larger engines and body sizes. Remember, however, that no two company's "D" range vehicles are necessarily the same model type and specification. In choosing a vehicle, consider your needs carefully. If you plan extensive trips during midsummer air conditioning may be vital if your party is not to end up dehydrated and irritable. Equally an "A" range car is unlikely to have the capacity to carry five adults and their entire luggage from Palma airport.

TOP

booking

When booking your car, do remember to specify any extra requirements such a child seats or roof racks, as most hire companies require several days notice for these. Not all companies quote rates for a standard tourist package to include Collision Damage Waiver and Insurance excess waiver. Do ensure you understand the basis for the tariff quoted so there are no unexpected additional costs on collection or in the event of vehicle damage.

TOP

collecting & returning your car at Palma airport

The majority of hire companies have kiosks either in the main arrival area or in the multi storey car park building facing you as you exit the main building.

Before departure ensure you have the following documents:

  • Driving Licence for each driver (UK Pink Licence or UK Green licence plus International Driving Permit)
  • Passport
  • Credit Card
  • Booking Confirmation Form

Do check your vehicle at the time of collection and ensure any damage is noted before you depart from the airport area.

Most hire companies expect their vehicles to be returned full of fuel. There is a petrol station on the airport approach road (exit side) so with only a minor detour filling can be done immediately prior to return.

Vehicles are usually returned to the same area they were collected from in the main parking building.
